Quantitative cortical mapping and neuroanatomical analyses establish that visual areas occupy roughly 25% (about a quarter) of the human cerebral cortex. The ~50% figure accurately describes non-human primates, such as the macaque monkey, but in humans, substantial expansion of association, frontal, and language areas reduces the visual cortex share to approximately one-quarter of total cortical area.
