What was done

Fifteen healthy infants (seven boys, eight girls) underwent 24-hour home polygraphic monitoring at 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months of age using the Oxford Medical System. Sleep states and stages were visually scored in 30-second epochs according to Rechtschaffen and Kales criteria adapted for children, covering both diurnal and nocturnal periods across each 24-hour cycle.

What was found

Across the 2-year period, total sleep time, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and indeterminate sleep continuously decreased, while waking time, quiet sleep, and stages 1 and 2 sleep increased. Slow-wave sleep percentage remained stable across all ages. Developmental shifts appeared earlier and were more pronounced in daytime sleep, particularly for REM sleep. After 12 months of age, nocturnal sleep efficiency and REM period duration significantly increased, while total nocturnal sleep duration and awakenings decreased, and the stage 2 to REM sleep ratio reached 1:1.
