What was done

Researchers monitored naturalistic light exposure for at least one week using wearable sensors measuring objective melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (melanopic EDI) in 76 participants (38 taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs] and 38 unmedicated controls without psychiatric history). Participants also completed questionnaires evaluating mood symptoms (DASS-21) and chronotype (Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, MEQ).

What was found

Overall light exposure did not differ between SSRI users and controls. Accounting for group status, higher morning light exposure was associated with lower depressive and stress symptoms, and greater time spent above 50 melanopic EDI was associated with fewer depressive symptoms. A morning chronotype was linked to higher morning and daytime melanopic EDI, increased time in bright light (>50 and >250 melanopic EDI), and differences in light regularity. The abstract reports no numerical effect sizes, confidence intervals, or p-values.

Why it matters

This study provides objective wearable data showing that the timing and intensity of daily light exposure relate to mood symptoms and chronotype, and that these associations persist independently of SSRI medication status.

Limits
