Articles were subcategorized into pathophysiology, safety profile, and medical complications. A total of 25 research articles were included.

Neck chokes accounted for 14.1% of reported MMA match stoppages. The primary pathophysiologic mechanism for VNR-induced unconsciousness was determined to be cerebral hypoxia caused by decreased cerebral perfusion pressure from direct compression of the jugular veins and carotid arteries, with carotid sinus baroreceptor compression being a rare contributing factor. The current literature indicated an acceptable safety profile when VNRs are performed properly, though minimal quantitative data on long-term outcomes were reported.
