Psychological Mediators of Reduced Distress: Preregistered Analyses from a Randomized Controlled Trial of a Smartphone-Based Well-Being Training.

What was done
Researchers randomly assigned 662 adults (79.9% reporting clinical levels of anxiety or depression) to either a 4-week smartphone-based meditation intervention or a wait-list control condition during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Psychological distress and four preregistered mediators (mindful action, loneliness, cognitive defusion, and purpose) were evaluated five times during the 4-week intervention period and at a 3-month follow-up.
What was found
Assignment to the smartphone intervention significantly improved all four mediators. In single-mediator models, each significantly mediated the reduction in distress at 3-month follow-up, accounting for 21.9% to 62.5% of the total intervention effect. In an exploratory multiple-mediator model, no individual pathway reached statistical significance on its own, though reduced loneliness accounted for 61.7% of the combined indirect effect. Raw outcome scores and primary distress effect sizes were not reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
This study provides empirical mechanistic evidence showing that digital meditation apps reduce distress through distinct psychological pathways, with loneliness reduction representing the largest portion of the indirect effect.
Limits
The study used an inactive wait-list control rather than an active digital comparator. The sample was collected during the early COVID-19 pandemic, which may limit generalizability, and baseline-to-follow-up distress values were omitted from the abstract.
