Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) before and after skydiving for the first time in their lives to evaluate neural responses to imagining versus remembering the exact same unique event. Neural activity patterns were evaluated using multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), Bayesian inference, and representational similarity analysis (RSA).

What was found

The abstract reports no numerical values, sample sizes, or test statistics. Qualitatively, large areas of the default mode network exhibited identical activation patterns during both recollection and imagination. Several frontal areas were active during imagination but not recollection. Representational similarity analysis identified differential activation patterns between memory and imagination specifically in the left ventral precuneus, suggesting its role in episodic recollection.

Why it matters

By comparing neural representations of the same novel event before and after its occurrence, this study provides insight into how the brain distinguishes future simulation from past episodic retrieval within overlapping default mode network regions.

Limits

The abstract provides no sample size, demographic information, or quantitative effect sizes. Furthermore, findings based on a highly salient, extreme event (skydiving) may not generalize to mundane or routine episodic memories and simulations.
