Cortical volume reductions in men transitioning to first-time fatherhood reflect both parenting engagement and mental health risk.

What was done
Thirty-eight first-time fathers completed MRI brain scans during their partner's pregnancy and again 6 months postpartum. Participants also provided self-report data prenatally and at 3, 6, and 12 months postpartum assessing infant bonding, planned work leave, time spent with the infant, parenting stress, sleep, and mental health.
What was found
Significant gray matter volume reductions were detected across the entire cortex, but not subcortical regions. Larger reductions were observed in fathers reporting stronger prenatal and postpartum bonding, longer planned work leave, more time spent with the infant, and lower parenting stress. However, controlling for prenatal baseline, larger cortical reductions also predicted more postpartum sleep problems, depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. Reductions were smaller when infants were older at the postpartum scan. No numerical values, effect sizes, or test statistics were reported in the abstract.
Why it matters
These findings suggest that structural brain remodeling during the transition to parenthood occurs in fathers as well as mothers, potentially supporting caregiving adaptation while simultaneously indexing vulnerability to perinatal mood and sleep disturbances.
Limits
The sample was small (n = 38) and lacked a control group of non-father men to account for age-related or test-retest variations over time. Mental health and caregiving behaviors relied exclusively on self-reports, and the abstract omitted quantitative effect estimates.
