Critical Test of the Beneficial Consequences of Lifting the Ban on Direct-to-Consumer Advertising for Prescription Drugs in Italy: Experimental Exposure and Questionnaire Study.

What was done

A snowball sample of 180 participants in Italy was randomized into three experimental groups: (1) a traditional information sheet, (2) an Italian-translated direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) video clip for an antidepressant prescription drug, or (3) both. The study measured post-exposure depression knowledge (treatments, symptoms/prevalence, antidepressant side effects), depression literacy, and empowerment via questionnaire.

What was found

No significant differences in empowerment were found between any groups. Participants exposed to the DTCA video had lower depression literacy and lower knowledge about treatments, symptoms, and prevalence compared to the information sheet condition. However, general depression knowledge and the side effects subscale scored higher when exposed to the DTCA video alone or combined with the sheet. Knowledge of symptoms and prevalence increased only when the video was paired with the written sheet. The abstract reports no numerical values, effect sizes, or p-values.

Why it matters

This study provides empirical evidence questioning pharmaceutical industry claims that direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising promotes patient empowerment and comprehensive health literacy. Written information was more effective for conveying treatment and disease symptom knowledge.

Limits

The study used a small snowball sample (n=180) in one country testing a single condition (depression) using translated US material in an artificial single-exposure setting. Actual clinical behaviors, help-seeking, and long-term retention were not measured, and the abstract reports no numerical data.
