What was done

A randomized, parallel pilot study evaluated a 6-week online mindfulness-based stress management program (≥5 min/day meditation) compared to an active control group (≥5 min/day listening to relaxing music) in healthy nurses with above-average perceived stress. A total of 61 nurses were randomized, with 52 included in the final analysis. Outcomes evaluated at baseline and 6 weeks (with stress evaluated up to 12 weeks) included self-reported stress, whole-blood mRNA expression of 53 pre-determined stress-related immune genes, plasma cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, IFN-γ), PBMC telomerase activity, and diurnal salivary cortisol profiles.

What was found

The abstract provides no exact numerical values, effect sizes, or p-values. At 6 weeks, the control group reported significant reductions in perceived stress, while the mindfulness group did not. By 12 weeks, the mindfulness group also showed significant stress reduction. Compared to control, the mindfulness intervention produced no significant changes in RNA gene expression, cytokine profiles, telomerase activity, or salivary cortisol.

Why it matters

While brief online mindfulness can reduce subjective stress over time, low-volume digital practice may not reach the threshold needed to induce measurable changes in circulating immune, endocrine, or transcriptional biomarkers.

Limits
