What was done
Forty-five fathers and their six-month-old infants were observed during a laboratory-based free-play interaction. Paternal physical touch was micro-coded at 1/10-second intervals into specific touch types (playful proprioceptive, gentle affectionate, and functional proprioceptive). Paternal blood plasma was collected post-interaction to measure oxytocin using two immunoassay methods: with and without an extraction step.
What was found
The abstract reports no exact numerical values, correlation coefficients, or p-values. Extracted and unextracted oxytocin levels were moderately correlated. Playful proprioceptive touch was positively associated with both extracted and unextracted oxytocin levels. Gentle affectionate touch and functional proprioceptive touch were positively associated with unextracted oxytocin only. Fathers who engaged in no physical touch had lower levels across both assay methods.
Why it matters
This study shows that specific forms of tactile engagement, particularly playful physical touch, are linked to paternal oxytocin concentrations. It also highlights methodological discrepancies in oxytocin measurement by demonstrating that assay extraction methods alter the detectability of behavioral associations.
Limits
The sample size is small (n = 45), limiting statistical power. The design is cross-sectional and observational, preventing causal conclusions about whether touch stimulated oxytocin or higher baseline oxytocin prompted more touch. Only biological fathers with six-month-old infants were tested in an artificial laboratory environment, and maternal behaviors or baseline pre-interaction oxytocin levels were not reported.
