What was done
In 21 healthy volunteers, researchers mapped cortical hand representations using 3T fMRI during repetitive pneumatic stimulation of the thumb (D1) and little finger (D5) on both hands. Cortical distances between D1 and D5 activation maxima were measured across complete primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and within cytoarchitectonic subdivisions (Areas 1, 2, 3a, and 3b) by two blinded independent raters. Participants completed behavioral testing for tactile sensitivity (von Frey hair cutaneous sensory thresholds), spatio-tactile acuity (grating orientation thresholds and two-point discrimination), and motor performance (Roeder pinch grip test).
What was found
The abstract reports bilateral associations between the cortical D1–D5 representation distance and grating orientation thresholds, as well as partial associations with two-point discrimination, specifically in Area 3b and Area 1. These associations were not present when using the complete S1 mask. The abstract reports no numerical effect sizes, correlation coefficients, or p-values.
Why it matters
The findings demonstrate that high-resolution 3T fMRI with subfield-specific analysis can detect relationships between individual tactile acuity and somatosensory cortical map dimensions in humans, which are missed when analyzing S1 as an undifferentiated whole.
Limits
The sample size is small (n = 21) and limited to healthy volunteers. The cross-sectional design cannot establish causality or track longitudinal plasticity. Stimulation was limited to D1 and D5 rather than mapping all five digits, and the abstract omits quantitative effect sizes and confidence intervals.
