What was found

Distinct clusters representing specifically elevated general anxiety or academic anxiety (math and test anxiety) emerged only in the older student group (Years 7-8). Boys were slightly more likely than girls to exhibit elevated academic anxiety relative to general anxiety. Older students with specifically academic anxiety demonstrated lower academic performance than those who also had elevated general anxiety.

Why it matters

These findings suggest academic anxiety becomes differentiated from general anxiety as students transition into secondary school. Identifying isolated academic anxiety profiles may help target educational and psychological interventions more effectively.
