What was done

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted using searches across MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane CENTRAL. Included trials had a duration of at least 3 weeks and evaluated diets enriched with oat β-glucan compared with control diets on LDL-cholesterol, non-HDL-cholesterol, or apoB. Two independent reviewers extracted data and assessed study quality. Data were pooled using generic inverse-variance random-effects models.

What was found

Across 58 trials (n = 3,974), a median intake of 3.5 g/d of oat β-glucan significantly reduced: - LDL-cholesterol: -0.19 mmol/l (95% CI -0.23 to -0.14 mmol/l, P < 0.00001) - Non-HDL-cholesterol: -0.20 mmol/l (95% CI -0.26 to -0.15 mmol/l, P < 0.00001) - ApoB: -0.03 g/l (95% CI -0.05 to -0.02 g/l, P < 0.0001) Considerable unexplained statistical heterogeneity was detected for LDL-cholesterol (I² = 79%) and non-HDL-cholesterol (I² = 99%).

Why it matters

This review provides quantitative evidence that a moderate daily dose of oat β-glucan lowers circulating atherogenic lipid markers, supporting its use as an adjunct dietary strategy for cardiovascular disease risk reduction.

Limits

There was substantial unexplained heterogeneity among the included studies, particularly for non-HDL-cholesterol (I² = 99%) and LDL-cholesterol (I² = 79%). The analysis evaluated surrogate lipid biomarkers rather than clinical cardiovascular events, and the abstract does not report participant baseline risk status, trial quality ratings, or long-term adherence.
