What was done
A randomized controlled trial examined whether graded levels of psychological self-distancing improve executive function (EF) in young children. Ninety-six children—48 three-year-olds and 48 five-year-olds—were randomly assigned to one of four conditions varying in distance from the self: self-immersed, control, third-person perspective, or an exemplar role-play condition (e.g., pretending to be Batman). Performance was assessed on a comprehensive measure of EF, and preliminary analyses evaluated the role of theory of mind.
What was found
The abstract reports no raw scores, effect sizes, confidence intervals, or exact p-values. Overall EF performance increased with greater self-distancing across the sample, but follow-up analyses showed this effect was driven entirely by 5-year-olds. Five-year-olds showed significant improvements in EF relative to controls in both the third-person perspective and exemplar conditions. Three-year-olds showed no significant EF performance improvements as a function of self-distancing.
Why it matters
This study indicates that psychological self-distancing strategies, such as exemplar role-play, can enhance conscious cognitive control in children as young as age five. It suggests that emerging developmental abilities like theory of mind may be prerequisites for benefiting from perspective-taking cognitive interventions.
