Fifteen expert practitioners of compassion meditation underwent fMRI scanning while viewing film clips of individuals in distress. Participants completed three conditions: passive viewing, compassion meditation, and cognitive reappraisal to modulate their emotional reactions. The study evaluated subjective affective experience and brain activation patterns across the strategies.
What was found
Both compassion meditation and reappraisal modulated experienced affect, but through distinct mechanisms: compassion primarily increased positive affect, whereas reappraisal primarily reduced negative affect. Relative to passive viewing and reappraisal, compassion meditation increased activation in reward- and affiliation-related neural regions, including the ventral striatum and medial orbitofrontal cortex. This neural network was active prior to stimulus presentation. The abstract reports no numerical values or effect sizes.
