What was done
University anatomy and physiology students studied three sets of scientific passages (cardiac electrophysiology, ventilation, and endocrinology). Each student was randomly assigned to study one passage set by reading three consecutive times (R-R-R), another by reading and rereading with note-taking (R-R + N), and a third by reading, recalling as much as possible via self-testing, and rereading (R-T-R). Retention was evaluated after one week.
What was found
Retention scores after one week were significantly higher in the self-testing condition (R-T-R: 53.95 ± 1.72) than in repeated reading (R-R-R: 48.04 ± 1.83) or reading with note-taking (R-R + N: 48.31 ± 1.78).
Why it matters
This demonstrates that the testing effect observed in controlled cognitive laboratory settings translates directly to real-world undergraduate physiology coursework and independent study habits.
Limits
