What was done

Researchers measured brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in expert and novice meditation practitioners while they generated a loving-kindness-compassion meditation state or remained in a comparison/rest state. Affective reactivity was evaluated by presenting emotional (positive and negative/distress) and neutral sounds during meditation and rest periods. Autonomic response was assessed via pupil diameter, and regional brain activations were compared between groups and states.

What was found

Emotional sounds during meditation (versus rest) were associated with increased pupil diameter and activation in limbic areas, including the insula and cingulate cortices. During meditation, expert meditators had significantly greater insula activation in response to negative distress sounds compared to positive or neutral sounds than novice meditators. Across both groups, insula activation strength correlated with self-reported meditation intensity. Experts also demonstrated greater activation than novices in the amygdala, right temporo-parietal junction, and right posterior superior temporal sulcus across all sound types during meditation relative to rest.
