What was done

Three years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, researchers evaluated participants using behavioral and functional brain imaging techniques. Participants were categorized based on their location during the attacks into Downtown Manhattan (near the World Trade Center) and Midtown Manhattan (a few miles away). Brain activation and recollective experiences were compared during the retrieval of 9/11 memories versus personally selected control memories from 2001.

What was found

The abstract reports no numerical values or sample sizes. Directionally, Downtown participants demonstrated selective amygdala activation and reported emotionally enhanced recollective experiences when retrieving 9/11 memories compared to control events. Midtown participants did not show selective amygdala activation or enhanced emotional recollection for 9/11 memories relative to control events.

Why it matters

These findings suggest that close physical and personal proximity to a traumatic event is necessary to recruit the amygdala-mediated neural mechanisms underlying vivid flashbulb memories.

Limits

The abstract does not provide participant counts, statistical metrics, or effect sizes. As an observational, retrospective study conducted three years post-event, recall bias, subjective control event selection, and unmeasured confounding factors cannot be excluded.
