What was done
A 22-month follow-up telephone survey was conducted among youth and young adults aged 12–20 years exposed to the Florida "truth" antitobacco counteradvertising campaign. Logistic regression models were used to calculate adjusted odds ratios evaluating whether baseline nonsmokers remained nonsmokers at follow-up based on confirmed advertisement awareness, self-reported influence of the campaign's central theme, and anti-tobacco industry manipulation attitudes, controlling for gender and baseline smoking susceptibility.
What was found
The abstract reports no specific numerical odds ratios, percentages, or sample sizes. It qualitatively reports that the likelihood of remaining a nonsmoker increased with higher confirmed ad awareness, greater perceived message theme influence, and stronger antitobacco attitudes. This dose-response pattern was consistent across younger youth, older youth, and individuals aging into early young adulthood.
Why it matters
It provides evidence that youth-targeted antitobacco media campaigns can exert cumulative, dose-dependent protective effects that persist into early young adulthood, largely mediated by shifts in attitudes against tobacco industry manipulation.
